What the extension reads
- Your bookmarks. XDMosaic is a bookmarks launcher, so it reads your browser's bookmarks to list and search them, and changes them when you ask it to: renaming, editing an address, moving, sorting, creating or deleting.
- The page you are on, when you ask. When you press
+ Tab, it reads the title and address of the current tab so it can bookmark that page. It cannot read any tab until you open XDMosaic, and it never reads the page's content. - Site icons, from your browser's own icon cache on your device. They are not fetched from any icon service, so drawing your bookmark list never tells anyone what is in it.
- Browsing history (optional, off by default). Only if you turn on “Rank by browser visit count” in Settings. XDMosaic then reads how often you visited your bookmarked pages over the last 90 days, to put the ones you use most at the top. That count is used in memory while the panel is open and is never stored or sent anywhere. Turning the setting off gives the permission back.
What it stores, and where
All of it lives in the extension's own storage on your device. None of it is synced to an account or a cloud. XDMosaic does not use your browser's sync storage, so nothing it stores goes to Google or anyone else.
| Stored | Why |
|---|---|
| Settings | Pinned bookmarks, which folders are expanded, theme, text size and sort order. |
| Open counts | How often you open each bookmark from XDMosaic, so search can rank the ones you use. Capped and pruned automatically. |
| Daily snapshots | Up to seven daily copies of your bookmark list, so something you deleted by mistake can be recovered later in the week. |
| Undo | The last bookmark you deleted, moved or saved, for ten minutes, so it can be undone. |
| Link-check results | Only if you have run the link check. Deleted when you revoke its permission. |
Uninstalling the extension deletes all of it. The Export button in Settings writes a copy to a file of your choosing, and that file is the only copy that outlives the extension.
What leaves your device
By default, nothing. XDMosaic makes no network requests at all, with one exception that you have to choose.
The link check finds bookmarks that no longer work. It needs a permission you grant separately, it is requested only when you start a check, and it runs only when you press the button: never on install, never on a timer, never in the background. When it runs:
- it asks each of your bookmarked public websites whether its page still exists. Like any visit, this tells each site that its page was requested;
- requests carry no cookies or sign-in data, and nothing identifying you is added;
- no site is told about any of your other bookmarks;
- addresses on your own network (routers, home servers, anything on a local or private address) are never contacted. They are listed as “not checked” instead;
- the results stay on your device.
What the developer receives
Nothing. There are no analytics, telemetry, crash reports, advertising, or tracking of any kind, and no server for the extension to report to. Your data is not sold, not shared, not used for advertising, and not used to decide creditworthiness or for any purpose other than the features described above.
Turning things off
- Browsing history: switch off “Rank by browser visit count” in XDMosaic's Settings, or remove the permission on your browser's extensions page.
- Link check: remove the site-access permission on your browser's extensions page. Its stored results are deleted along with it.
- Everything: uninstall the extension. Your bookmarks themselves stay in your browser, unchanged.
Children
XDMosaic does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children. It doesn't collect information at all.
Changes
If what the extension does with data ever changes, this page will be updated first and the effective date above will change with it. A change that sends anything off your device would be stated here plainly before it shipped.
